Bean Update and Baby J's Day

I had a check up today with my OB and all is good with the bean. I am just under 18 weeks and measuring perfectly. The heartbeat was around 150. My ultrasound is scheduled for next Monday and I'm excited to find out if it's a little boy or girl.

Baby J came along for the ride. He was antsy in the waiting room but did really well during the actual appointment - aside from the fact that he tried to escape his stroller.

Later this afternoon, Baby J and I went to the grocery store. I let him look at the apples - but no touching! He was very good in the store and the cashier gave him a blue balloon. When we got to the car, he decided to throw his first public temper tantrum because he didn't want to let go of the balloon for me to put him in his carseat. Fifteen minutes later, we were at home and he had forgotten all about the incident. He had his snack and is now napping. I was so excited to let him play with it after his nap but then I saw that it deflated for some reason. Now, I'm sad. I'm sure I'll find another way to entertain him though.

Happy Easter!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Easter. We started the day by giving Baby J his Easter basket. He was especially excited about the plastic eggs. He had fun putting them in and taking them out of his basket.

Later in the day, we went to his grandparents (Husband's parents) for dinner. Baby J really liked the green bean cassarole. He ate my whole serving. And he loved, loved, loved his first marshmallow peep!

And here's a bonus picture - Baby J showing off his new pair of BabyLegs last night. I'm a terrible mom - sharing this picture when he was so clearly unhappy with me, but it's just so cute!

Beautiful Day

It's a beautiful day here in Pittsburgh and Baby J was able to spend some time playing in the yard this afternoon. He loves being outside and exploring the grass, sidewalk, sticks and stones. He also likes walking along the sidewalk to the road - he really keeps mama on her toes!

Clearly, the antibiotic is working and Baby J is feeling better. No middle-of-the-night wakings for the last 3 nights and he slept in 'til 6 without needing to be held in the early morning. He's also starting to eat a little bit better. Yesterday, he decided he had a new favorite food. Apples. Not applesauce, not boiled pieces, whole cruncy apples. As Baby J was enjoying his snack of cheese, crackers and fruit pieces, I had an apple. He lost all interest in his snack and was screaming, crying and reaching for my apple. So, I let him try it out. Of course, I was quick to remove any large chunks that came loose (I'm absolutely terrified of him choking). When it was time to clean up, he didn't want to give it up and threw a fit. It was quite a sight. Since it was so cute and daddy missed it yesterday, I decided to replicate the scenerio again today. I wasn't even done rinsing the apple before Baby J started acting out and reaching for his new favorite snack. I ate most of the tough skin and handed it over.

This is all my fault. Every time we go to the grocery store, I let Baby J help me pick out apples - that is, I let him hold them for a minute and I explain that apples are round, red fruit. I guess I can't let him hold the apples anymore. He'll be taking bites in the store!!!

Bean is a...

Oh, and I forgot. I finally scheduled our "big" ultrasound for April 20. Hopefully, we'll see a beautiful, healthy baby that will cooperate and let us know whether we should begin buying pink or if we can reuse the blue. :)

Sick again and some happy things...

Well, Baby J's got another sinus infection. Ugh. At least it's not another ear infection. He spiked a fever yesterday at daycare and it hasn't really dropped since. We went to the Dr. office this morning and they confirmed a sinus infection and he has an rx for an antibiotic. I'm just relieved it's not the ears again and we don't need to consider tubes just yet.

Now for the good news...

Baby J had a great weekend. We did stuff around the house on Saturday and Baby J took two great naps (yay for mommy and daddy!). We also went to dinner at Morgan's - the silly little family restaurant in Penn Hills. Baby J loves going to restaurants and eating off of our plates. We got him chicken tenders (oops!) and he LOVED them. He also enjoyed flirting with the brunette bus girl. He has a thing for brunettes. Go figure...

Sunday, we visited with his grandparents ('husband's parents) after their month-long vacation. Baby J was eager to show off all of his new party tricks, most notably his walking skills which are getting better and better every day.

Also, I decided to order a couple of one-size, AIO cloth diapers to try and they arrived today. Woo hoo! I need to do the prewash tonight and then I'll probably try them out on Friday when I'm home with Baby J. I'll be sure to post some pictures of the cuteness. If we (read: Husband) like them, my goal is to be exclusively using cloth by the time bean arrives.

Rough night, day, night

Something is going on with little boy. My best guess is teeth (he's drooling so much that he soaks his clothes as soon as I put them on) or ears (again!). Last night, he was up at midnight for about 40 minutes. Then, he woke again at 3 and threw a fit for over an hour until Husband caved and went in and cuddled Baby J since we knew that he wouldn't sleep at daycare. He slept on Husband until 5:30 when I went in and took over so
husband could shower. Then, Husband took over at 6:30 so I could get dressed and dry my hair. He would not let us lay him down. We had to wake him at 7 to leave.

Today, he ate his solids at daycare but drank a total of 4 ounces of liquid all day long, which is actually pretty good for him when he's forced to drink from a bottle or cup. He finally seems to be taking to the bottle now that it's time to take the bottle away. He slept a total of 30 minutes all day.

Tonight, he absolutely refused to eat dinner so it was off to bath and bed. He fell asleep almost immediately but woke up inconsolable 30 minutes later. He is now in a motrin coma and we're hoping it lasts a long time! All three of us are exhausted tonight and really need some sleep. G'night!

Finally - Video of Baby J Walking!

I mentioned in a previous post that I'm having trouble uploading video. I took some new video this morning and finally had success with YouTube. Baby J is getting better and better every day. Am I really ready for this? ;)

Enjoy!

Considering Cloth

I'm considering switching Baby J over to cloth diapers and using cloth once the new baby arrives. My arguments are:

1. Baby J has a really sensitive bottom. He doesn't really get too many rashes, but he gets really dry and is scratching the second his diaper comes off. Cloth is all around better for baby bottoms and I think that the lack of chemicals might solve some of Baby J's skin issues.

2. We would save a considerable amount of money after the initial investment, provided I don't go crazy buying too many of the adorable all in ones or accessories.

3. We would dramatically reduce our carbon footprint, especially after bean arrives.

4. They are just so darn cute. We would probably end up using tri-folds and covers, but there's so many adorable (and incredibly convenient) options out there like bumgenius that go on just like disposibles - no folding or fussing!

I don't think daycare will use cloth - but these may be our best option.

Scott is not convinced yet, but I'll keep working on him.

Hello out there!

I've been saying that I was going to do this for a while - so here it is. Husband and I are planning to use this space to keep everyone in the loop on our lives, specifically our adventures with sweet Baby J and bean.

Here's the short version. aby J joined our family on 2/18/2008 and we have enjoyed the most amazing 13 months with him. He's intelligent, sweet and funny - as a matter of fact, he really cracks himself up sometimes with his crazy sounds and gestures! He's met all of the major one-year milestones - sat up, crawled, eats solids, first words were mama and dada (mama was first!!! yay for me!!!), and he's now taking those first independant steps. He's able to walk across the entire living room floor and I'm not sure who is more proud - aby J or mama and dada. He concentrates so hard as he walks and then once he reaches his destination, he gives a huge smile and laughs and claps his hands. He may just be imitating us, though ;) I have some great video but am having trouble uploading it. I'll keep working on it!

This photo of Baby J was taken by photographer Ashley Hylbert. We had our second sitting with her last weekend. She did a wonderful job capturing Baby J's amazing energy. You can see the pictures from the sitting on my picasa site: http://picasaweb.google.com/Heather.Johanson/AshleyHylbertSitting32109. Ashley lives in Tennessee but makes frequent trips to Pittsburgh. You can see other samples of her work at: http://www.ashleyhylbert.com/Website/Welcome.html. Thanks, Ashley, for these fantastic pictures!

We learned in early January that we are expecting Baby J's brother or sister to arrive on September 16. We are incredibly excited, though I might admit that the thought of 2 under 2 is just a wee bit overwhelming. We had an ultrasound done at 12 weeks (I'm 15 weeks and change now) and baby looks perfect and healthy. We'll have another ultrasound in a couple of weeks once I get around to scheduling the appointment and we will most definitely find out whether it's a little boy or girl. For now, here's a picture from the first ultrasound.

Well, we're not great at keeping up with things like this but we'll do our best to post updates regularly.
